Stop messing up your customer research, just ask the right f*cking question.

This sub is full of wannabe SaaS founders struggling with marketing, burning through runway testing random channels, and complaining about low conversion rates.

Meanwhile, everyone uses chatgpt for useless customer "research" in-app:

  • "Why did you choose our product?"
  • "What features do you like best?"
  • "How did you find us?"

And they get the same worthless answers:

  • "It looked good"
  • "The interface is nice"
  • "Found you on Google"

No sh*t. What are you supposed to do with that? Write another generic landing page about your "intuitive interface"?

Just change ONE question. Instead of "why did you choose us"; ask "what were you doing when you realized you needed something like this?"

A guy I worked with had the question "why did you choose our CRM" at sign up. I changed it to "what made you start looking for a CRM?" (self-promo but not really)

You know what happened? We learnt that 63% of his customers started looking after losing a deal due to poor follow up.

There was an 11pm crisis moment that drove people to the CRM. Now, with that knowledge, wouldn't it make it easier to market this product?

Your ads would convert better, your cold outreach would have a genuine pain point, your website messaging would be more effective. Heck, even your marketing channels would be easier to pick.

But no, we'll keep seeing more of "10 growth hacks for SaaS" threads and "why isn't my most generic-value-prop converting?" posts.

The answers are in your customer stories. Just ask the right f*cking question.
